NEDA - Annual Report 2010-2011

NEDA - Annual Report 2010-2011

This year was packed with opportunities for NEDA to develop new networks and consolidate existing ones. I feel that our small secretariat managed these challenges well as a team allowing us to raise the profile of NEDA as a principled and rights focused peak body. NEDA is very well positioned to represent the rights and interests of people from NESB with disability. It has been a privilege and a journey of growth for me to lead NEDA during an exciting time of policy openings.

A New System for Better Employment and Social Outcomes - Review of Australia’s Welfare System

A New System for Better Employment and Social Outcomes - Review of Australia’s Welfare System

NEDA believes that it is time for the Federal Government to consider targeted strategies and implement a stronger employment focus in increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities, especially those from CaLD and/or NESB communities.
Recent data show that workforce participation for people with disabilities in Australia have dropped to 53% and when compared with other OECD countries, Australia ranks 21st out of 29 in employment participation rates for people with a disability.

Review of the National Disability Advocacy Framework

Review of the National Disability Advocacy Framework

The National Disability Advocacy Framework (the Framework) is the structure that governments work within to enable and support people with disability to protect their rights and overcome barriers.

The implementation of the Framework is guided by the principles and priorities of Commonwealth, State and Territory Disability Services legislation, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the National Disability Agreement and the National Disability Strategy.

Disability and Multiculturalism: Data and the "Healthy Migrant."

Disability and Multiculturalism: Data and the "Healthy Migrant."

In 2008, the Council of Australian Governments created a new 5 year National Disability Agreement (NDA), which would provide continued funding for services to people with disability in Australia. The new agreement was framed amidst an Australian Government reform agenda, which in replacing the old Commonwealth States and Territories Disability Agreement, would bring a new direction to disability service provision, including a focus on working within the rights laid out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
